What do I need to consider when applying for a Dutch passport or ID card abroad?

If you live abroad and want to apply for a Dutch passport or ID card, you’ll need to prepare more than if you lived in the Netherlands. There are often more steps involved, and it might not always be possible to get an appointment straight away. Find out what you need to be aware of.

Your application may take longer

Keep in mind that you need to gather documents for your application and that processing times may be longer than usual. 
Useful to know:

  • Most passport applications are submitted between April and October, making this a very busy period. It may take longer for your new passport or ID card to be ready. If you don’t need your new passport immediately, you are advised to wait and apply between November and March.
  • If you live outside the Netherlands, each time you apply for a Dutch passport or ID card, checks must be carried out to verify you hold Dutch nationality. As you are not registered with a Dutch municipality, you will need to provide additional documentation. This takes extra time.
  • Gathering this documentation and, if needed, having it legalised can be a lengthy process. So check carefully what you need and start gathering your documentation in good time.

Prepare well

Your application will go more smoothly if you prepare well. Consider the following:

  • The number of application locations abroad is limited. Be aware that you’ll need time to travel to the application location. You might even need to plan to spend a night nearby if you have to travel from far away.
  • You may not be able to get an appointment straight away. Slots often fill up quickly. So book your appointment in good time.
  • Make sure that you have all your documents before you make an appointment. Select your country and create a personal checklist to see which documents you need to bring. If you are missing any documents, or if your documents have not been legalised or translated, the application will take longer. If any of the following documents are missing, your application will not be processed:
    • Application form for passport or ID card (completed in full, printed and signed)
    • All passports and ID cards (Dutch and foreign) in your name
    • Permission of one or both parents (for applications for a child aged under 18).
