How long does it take to apply for a passport or ID card abroad?

Language selection:English

We cannot say exactly how long it will take to process an application for a new passport or ID card. The standard processing time is 4 weeks. Please keep in mind that it may take longer before you receive your new passport. Please contact us only if you have not received an email after 8 weeks.

Information: Start your application at least 6 months in advance. You do not need to wait until your old passport is about to expire. The period between November and March is less busy. If you do not need your new passport straight away, preferably apply during this period.

Why might my application take longer?

Applying for a passport or ID card from abroad takes longer than applying in the Netherlands. How long it takes depends on your personal situation and the country you live in.

It may take longer to receive your passport because:

  • your passport or ID card is produced in the Netherlands and sent abroad
  • it is busier than usual because many Dutch passports are currently expiring
  • your personal situation requires additional checks
  • you need to provide or legalise additional documents
  • the embassy still needs to send your passport to your home address if you do not collect it yourself

When should I get in touch?

After you submit your application, you will receive an email when there is more information. This email will tell you that your passport or ID card is ready, or that you still need to do something, such as provide or legalise an additional document. Until then, we cannot provide you with any information. Thank you for your understanding.

If you have not received a message 8 weeks after submitting your application, please contact NetherlandsWorldwide.
